Gas Power Generation Continues to Rip
Highlights:
Through early July natural gas power generation in the U.S. is up 6.4% versus coal up 1.4%
Despite the push toward renewable energy sources, natural gas remains the dominant form of power generation
Mid-to-late June saw daily gas burn for power generation outpacing the same days 2023 by 10-20% due to the early heat wave
Trailing 12M coal generation is down 6.5% versus natural gas up 5.7%
Coal has averaged 28% of the thermal stack in 2024, down from 44% in 2018
Coal-gas switching continues to show high correlation to natural gas pricing
