U.S. Battery Storage Monthly

Step-Change Higher in July

Highlights:

  • EnerWrap utilizes the EIA-923 report to analyze and provide insights into gross battery storage discharge in the United States, data that is generally unavailable elsewhere

  • With the July 2024 data out, it is apparent battery storage markets are in material growth mode - as we’ve noted in The Nooner rarely a day goes by without another project being announced

  • U.S. gross battery storage discharge in July was 1,169,151 MWHrs - the highest on record - up 22.9% versus last month and up 139.3% versus last year

  • Last 12-month U.S. gross battery discharge was 8.97 GWHrs, up 90.4%

  • U.S. operating battery storage capacity is currently 25,987 MW, which expands by more than double to 60,960 MW with what is in the current pipeline

  • California leads the way in gross discharge, with Arizona, Nevada and Texas following, however, Texas will surpass California in capacity in 2025

  • Battery storage projects are operating at capacity factors similar to gas peaking plants on a gross discharge basis, we highlight plant-level capacity factors below
