U.S. 1H 2024 Power Generation Capacity Additions
Solar & Battery Dominate
Highlights:
EnerWrap reviewed the EIA-860M report through June to analyze first half 2024 U.S. power capacity additions compared to previous years
20,149 MW of capacity was added to the U.S. grid, up 15% compared to last year and 36% versus 2020
Solar & battery are dominating - solar represents 56% of 2024 capacity additions, with battery at 21%
With another 43,037 MW planed for the second half of 2H 2024, 2024 appears shaped to be the 2nd highest capacity addition year in U.S. history behind 2002 (66,460 MW).

Renewable are now dominating U.S. capacity additions.

Solar and batter share are increasing by month.

The increase in solar & battery capacity additions are considerable compared to prior years.

Solar capacity additions were 59% of total capacity in 1H 2024. Battery capacity has grown from less than 1% of capacity additions to over 20% since 2000.

The U.S. power grid is changing rapidly. Despite skepticism about renewables, the growth is happening now.
