U.S. Monthly Power Generation
Natural Gas Breaking Records
Highlights:
EnerWrap wrangles the EIA data power generation data into monthly data to provide an early look at the prior month power trends
Total U.S. power generation in August 2024 was 411 TWh, down 1.4% versus last month and down 1.3% compared to last year
Natural gas hit an all-time high daily record on August 2nd, at 7.12 TWh
Natural gas was 46.2% of the power stack in August, flat versus July - this represents the all-time monthly high for gas share going back to at least 2018
The last daily solar record was on June 14th, 2024 and the latest wind record on February 27th, 2024
Solar was 5.4% of the power stack for the month, up from 5.3% in July and 4.0% last year
Wind continues to disappoint as the weather gets hotter, producing 7.2% of the August power stack, up slightly compared to July
Solar + wind combined for 12.6% of the power stack and all green sources (incl. Nuclear and Hydro) were 34.9%
Natural gas continues to dominate the U.S. power stack.

Gas generation is taking out daily and monthly records.

Gas share of the U.S. power stack was the highest on record in August.

Solar continues to shine, with strong growth.

Daily solar generation is up and to the right.

Wind generation is showing considerable seasonality, with less wind during hotter months.

Despite the seasonality of wind, the trend for solar + wind is higher.
