Gas Power Continues to Remain Strong
Highlights:
Renewable growth continue to garner most of the attention in U.S. power markets, but natural gas power generation is an under-reported story
August 2024 natural gas power generation was 190 TWh, the second highest monthly amount on record, behind only last month
August gas generation was down 1.4% versus last month and up 2% compared to a year ago
August 2nd is the highest single-day record at 7.1 TWh
Last 12-month U.S. natural gas generation was 2,007 TWHrs, up 5.3%
Total natural gas capacity is currently 569,353 megawatts
U.S. operating and planned natural gas capacity through 2030 is 579,188 MW
Like other power markets, Texas is surpassing overall U.S. growth with LTM gas generation up 5.8% - Texas represents 15.8% of U.S. gas generation over the last year
