U.S. Wind Power Monthly
Where Has The Wind Gone?
Highlights:
One of the more under reported dynamics in the U.S. clean energy movement is the recent stalling out of wind power generation - indeed YTD 2024 wind generation is barely outpacing 2022, higher by only 0.6%
As solar generation growth continues to grab the headlines, wind generation was up a mere 0.8% in July 2024 compared with last year despite capacity being 4.3% higher
Wind power continues to show seasonality, with warmer weather negatively impacting output - indeed as temperatures rose, July’s generation of 28,172 MW was lower by a whopping 27.5% versus June, the largest month-over-month drop going back to at least 2018
Last 12-month U.S. wind generation was 465.3 GWHrs, down 1.2% compared to last year
Total wind capacity is currently 152,139 megawatts, up 4.3% year-over-year
With 41,887 megawatts, Texas continues to dominate U.S. wind capacity with a 27.7% share
